For most of us that means an end to summer and an end to beach vacations and sitting poolside. Unfortunately to many folks that means an end to bikini waxes – a little extra hair keeps you warm for the winter, right? No!!!

Here’s the scoop on why you really should consider waxing on a regular (non-seasonal) basis:

#1: It’s MUCH less intense, less painful, if you keep up with it rather than waiting until the summer.

#2: You won’t have the constant itch, sting, redness, and bumps of freshly shaved and sliced skin.

#3: The hair will continue to get softer, finer, and decrease in volume the more consistent you are.

#4: Every time you start over again from a waxing hiatus, and shave (or not) you are letting the hair cycle run amok. Which means, you’ll have to wait AGAIN for your hair to grow out for three weeks before that first wax so that all your hair can be at the same length for a proper wax. Getting this length can take up to THREE sessions. Want to do all this in the summer? If you wax on a regular basis (through fall and winter, too), all your hair will stay at the same length, your hair regrowth will be minimal, and you can go longer without hair (before it starts to grow back in) between your wax sessions.

#5: You stay groomed, cleaned up, fresher, AND sassier for YOUR sake, for your own comfort. Your skin is your own to respect and take care of. So take care of your skin and your skin will take care of you.

The last time I checked, the feminist movement, feminist belief, has to do with the ability to MAKE OUR OWN CHOICES equally with that of any other sentient being. This includes the ability to go fully de-haired in my lady bits. Why is it anyone’s business to judge those of us who like to see our own skin? Why must me removing my hair have everything to do with pleasing a man? Why does it automatically mean that I MUST be trying to look like a pre-pubescent teenager and that my partner is some kind of creep? Why does hair removal have ANYTHING to do with pleasing anyone other than myself?

I see between eight to ten clients a day – most of them for some type of bikini wax – from conservative trimming to the Full Monty with age ranges from 21- 70. And I’ve been doing this for nearly eight years, so I can tell you from an experienced point of view that most women who get some form of bikini service do so because of the desire to feel clean, fresh, well-groomed, and hate the time-consumption and irritation of shaving. NOT because they are trying to please a partner who wants to have sex with a pre-pubescent child. NOT because they are subjugating themselves to a man’s whims. NOT because we are conforming to society’s expectations. These narrow-minded views are unfair and based on a very misguided assumption that women are weak and don’t have the brains to make their own decisions. I won’t deny there is a visual aspect to certain types of bikini waxing, but WHY does it have to be equated with pre-pubescence?? Why can’t it be that we just want to show off our VULVA (say it with me – VULVA) because we think it is beautiful? And what IS wrong with the extra visual stimulation a bikini/Brazilian could provide? And for all the detractors who call full waxing ‘creepy’, perhaps you may need to try it first, open your mind to your own womanhood. All that beautiful skin? It’s you. It’s gorgeous – no need to hide it. It is feminine, it is feminist. Hair or no hair, it’s your choice. And based on my experience, one of the most common sentiments among my clients is expressed by the husband of one of my Brazilian waxing clients: “he doesn’t care what I do down there – he’s just happy for the invite.”

Let it out if you wish. Let it breathe. See the beauty that lies beneath.

Secondly, when you remove your hair, you are also removing one of the skin’s natural barriers. The hair shaft can provide a pathway for the oil, sweat, and other debris to escape the skin. Once you remove that hair, these things can get trapped inside the pore. Thus, you must take extra care to keep these pores cleaned out. I am not trying to deter you with this – waxing is still the most cost-effective, budget-friendly, and skin healthy way to safely remove hair. But it will take some time for you and your skin to get adjusted to it – you must be patient – and by understanding the principles of hair growth and hair removal, listening and adhering to the guidelines and protocols established by your expert esthetician you will absolutely have the best, most sassiest skin you’re in.

And speaking of bush…oh no, she didn’t. Oh yes she did! This is also your friendly reminder that it may be time for some of you to have a little yard maintenance. Whether it’s a brow wax, leg wax, underarm, or bikini wax, chances are you’re letting the hair get too long. And if you do let it grow too long it will just be that much more painful by your next wax. The key to stress-less waxing is consistency, consistency, consistency. Four to six weeks, all year long. And don’t be surprised if in several years after your follicles have become weaker and weaker, that your hair is now half of what it used to be. You will also have much longer periods between regrowth. It really is worth it.

The first full work week for most people begins on Monday yet January is when work slows down for me. On these cold, cold days apparently some folks need the extra layer of hair to keep them warm warm.
But I say nay! Shed the hair, and buy an extra pair of undies or long-johns! Besides (and this is a very big besides) the sooner you start your body/bikini waxing (i.e. now) the more prepared you will be by the time spring comes around in a few short months.
Because remember: hair grows in three cycles, and it can take up to three waxing sessions (once/month) for the hair to all grow out together, thus, be waxed out all together, thus extending the life of your smooth, hair-free skin. Et voile!
